Ultra turbos come in a variety of different names, but they all mean the same thing: faster than a regular turbo. The next step up from a turbo event is a ultra turbo. On some poker sites, a standard turbo event will have slightly longer than 5 minute levels, but you will rarely find anything over 10 minutes. The most popular and commonplace turbo events are generic turbos which carry 5 minute blind levels. There are varying degrees of turbo tournaments. I try to avoid this tournament structure, but they are prevalent. Many poker players will refer to these tournaments as a game of 'Bingo'. The nature of these tournaments gives the less skilled player a greater chance of winning. On this page, I will refer to the short stack tournament and/or accelerated blind structure (Turbo) tournament. If you're playing with 50-100 BB stacks, by the time you have a bet and a raise on the flop, if you're committed it's always going in either on the flop or the turn. Adjusting to the faster style of play is not only important in turbo tournaments, it is an absolute necessity.Įssence of Deep Stack Poker Strategy Deep stacks are defined as 200 BBs or more and the biggest change in game-play is you actually have to play the turn and river. You can’t profitably sit back and wait for strong hands to play when your chip stack is rapidly being eaten away by the blinds alone. Needless to say, this creates a lot of action and changes the dynamics of tournament play completely. Most turbo tournaments have blind levels that don’t last any longer than 5 or so minutes. In turbo events, however, everything is the exact opposite. In normal tournaments, players will find long blind levels and a rigorous test of endurance. Turbo tournaments are a very unique form of poker. This most notably occurs in turbo tournaments where the average stack size is quite short. Having a deep stack, and therefore expanding an opening range to include a lot of speculative suited hands and small pairs is a tournament strategy that is going to be punished if a number of short stacks are yet to act behind. For example, if you normally play $65 live tournaments, and $15 of the buy-in goes to the rake, which is fairly standard in most casinos, a 15% return on your $50 investment means that you will win $7.50.
